Speciality chemicals from local biomass

Speciality chemicals from local biomass

Theme 4: August 23 - December 23

Both consumers and producers are increasingly aware that we need to use our existing resources more sustainably and actively search for sustainable, green, and economically viable alternatives. Many different biomass (residual) streams, by-products, and primary products contain interesting structural and/or active components that can be valorized in the chemical industry. In the Flemish context, the focus often lands on the limited volumes of biomass streams. Therefore, we have chosen to focus on the valorization of 'specialty chemicals' rather than 'bulk chemicals.'

The components from biomass (residual) streams have significant potential to become valuable counterparts to traditionally used components from fossil resources such as petroleum. Research into these natural components is therefore crucial for the sustainable transformation of the Flemish chemical sector. Examples of natural components that are already being successfully experimented with include lignin from flax straw or the extraction of industrial oils from marigold.

Farmers are often still unaware of the (industrial) value of their by-products. The B2BE Facilitator aims to raise this awareness and, therefore, wants to map processing companies that are looking for specific molecules.

With this theme, the B2BE aims to create added value across various sectors — from farmers, to aquaculture, chemical industry, the logistics chain (collectors, processors)... Furthermore, this theme aligns seamlessly with the strategic agenda on bioeconomy of Circular Flanders, which also sets the ambition to focus on 'biochemicals that contribute to the sustainability of Flemish chemistry.' Flanders has high technological expertise in processing biomass into chemical building blocks.

The impact of this theme can be determined based on NACE-codes.
