Valorisation of dry crop residues

Theme 1: November 21 - May 22
During the harvesting and processing of arable and industrial crops such as flax, grain maize, wheat, and protein crops, dry crop residues (e.g., straw, flax shives, chaff...) are produced.
In this theme, we will explore new and high-value valorization pathways for these by-products. A particular focus will be placed on the logistical and legal challenges that the involved stakeholders must overcome to successfully implement the reuse of these side streams.

For this assignment, wheat straw has been excluded from consideration. Currently, there are already numerous applications for the valorization of wheat straw, including in agriculture and other sectors.
The B2BE Facilitator aims to bridge missing links in the production chain and facilitate connections between the relevant stakeholders. Over the next six months, we will strive to connect as many arable farmers (primary sector) as possible with the processing industry and vice versa. In this process, we will also pay special attention to mapping out the logistical partners.
The table below shows the tonnages of available dry crop residues in Flanders, for which we will further investigate applications within the bioeconomy:

Our goal is to keep you regularly updated on our findings and the progress we make in the matchmaking process. As an illustration, we would like to share the different steps of our approach:
