Reliable data on global biomass resource availabilty are important for investments required to develop sustainable bioeconomy supply chains. Current assessments are often controversial and incomparable due to inconsistencies in methods. We share results to date from compiling datafrom 70 countries using a replicable "extract–transform–load" framework and standardized classifications. We identify challenges due to discrepancies in definitions, unit conventions, moisture and ash assumptions, and the treatment of environmental and land-use constraints. While the current database improves comparability across some dimensions, more work is required for more comprehensive and coherent data on biomass availability. Recommendations are offered to improve future reporting and data compilation. Finally, we invite inputs for improving the data and would like to hear from any parties interested in collaborating with IEA Bioenergy and others to carry this initiative forward.
Policymakers, researchers and industry leaders need reliable data
about biomass supplies that can be mobilised at reasonable cost in
order to facilitate transitions to sustainable fuels, chemicals, and
materials.
But more work is needed understand the real potential for sustainable biomass supply chain mobilization. The webinar reviews the status of recent efforts to develop comparable biomass supply estimates around the world and shares practical insights on how to better understand global biomass potentials. The first presentation will introduce a practical framework for categorizing different types of biomass—such as crop residues, forestry byproducts, and dedicated energy crops—making it easier to compare and aggregate data. The second presentation will review a recent analysis of data from nations around the world, the challenges encountered, and corresponding recommendations for increasing future standardization. The webinar aims to support informed decision making by sharing updates on how biomass resources around the globe are being mapped and measured.
